How do you stay safe online? What would you do if you found yourself in a similar situation to Joe?

This is a very seriuos video for all people who use internet a lot. If I am in a simular situation like Joe is on the video, I should talk to a grown-up and talk with the head teacher. I should also never ignore the messages I get. As soon as I get a message or hear something about me that I don´t like to hear, I will say it to a grown-up so fast as I could do. I have never been in a situation like Joe because all my accounts on social webpages is always private. Sometimes I don´t even have my normal name as my username.

Cyberbullying is awful, but I think this video didn't show how bad cyberbullying can be. It's still awful, but this is one of the more "mild cases". Some people get so bullied over the internet today that they actually don't feel like there's any way to solve the problems, so they feel like the only choice is to commit suicide. I feel really bad for Joe and I really think he did the right thing, because after all they kind of solved the problem. I think more people who gets bullied should talk to their parents or any grown up they trust, because it will make everything so much easier.

Thanks for showing this it was really touching.
When i use the internet i often play online games and in online games flaming people is very common. So if someone writes something bad to me i will report them. I would not use something that has to do with my real name as my internet name or as you call it in game name. I would just come up with a random name and just give it to the people i trust and if someone would cyberbully me i would tell my parents and they will talk to some teacher. But if i dont know who is cyberbullying me i would just ignore it and report it.

We should all fight it.
But parents can take initial steps by not letting their children access the technology too much.

In our school, mobiles and other electronics are strictly prohibited.
Also, the country in which I reside has strict regulations about taking pictures in the public.

I use the internet every day, especially for online gaming. Meaning I've encountered many, many flamers and 'bad people'. (And believe me, I'm facing the worst of the worst.) I know very well those are just empty names and threats so I don't even bother to grant them the satisfaction of bringing me down. It's literally a daily thing for me. So, I can't say I understand the victims of cyberbullying. If you are too sensitive to use some websites, then don't use them. If I were in a same situation as Joe I'd probably beat the haters with my sassyness. I would ask them the points behind their criticism. I'd also bring up my points. And tell them why they shouldn't waste their time on something they don't like and do something productive instead. Instead of filling their lives with hate.
If that does not work, I'd just ignore them. Some random stranger in the world who hates me is not worth my time. You can't please everyone.
And i think my parents know that I'm capable of keeping my identity hidden on the internet. They also know I'm capable of outwitting anyone who tries to verbally assault me. So for now, I'm safe. (If i don't have FBI or MI6 chasing me. Then I'm in trouble)

Hi Khaleesi! Thanks for your really interesting comment about how you deal with online bullies. It's true that there are lots of people who are writing disprespectful comments online, just trying to get a reaction out of people. I think you're completely right to ignore people like that, who as you say are full of hate. Another option is to report them to the website concerned.

On the other hand, in Joe's case, the bullying seemed to be from people he knew at school. When cyberbullies know a person's real identity it can feel a lot more threatening for the victim. This type of bullying is very serious and can have serious consequences. No one should feel uncomfortable because of rumours, comments or other content shared via technology, and it's really important to tell a parent, teacher or other person who can stop the bullying as soon as possible. I love your strong attitude against bullies, Khaleesi! We need people like you to stand up against bullies by reporting them to a person in authority.

Best wishes,
Joanna

This video had deep impression upon me. I think, if somebody got in the situation like Joe's, he or she should say about it to parents or teachers. And everybody should feel safe in the Internet, so there is a reason not to put all private information to the Net and feel calm about it.

I found it very educational and interesting video on cyberbullyng, because it shows us that this problem exists in the school environment on digital violence. Together, we must prevent this harassment, so that no child is more victim.

I try to visit only educative sites. I have felt bad once in a social game and I closed my profile. I told to my parents and friends the real reason. It made me feel so sad. I can't visit sites that don't let me be myself. Some mean people offended me and they were asking personal information, like my phone number. I would never put it online. But we should know that internet is not safe. People can do what they want when they're online. Even the people who pretend to be our friends can try to harm us. So, be careful!

Hello.
Very good! This video gives us a moral for everyone.
Nobody has the right to make fun of other people.
Everyone should know how to use the Internet for good and not for evil acts.

I think he is over reacting, the way to beat the bullying its not ignoring it, the way to defeat it it letting the bullys know that they dont bother you at all.

Hi,
Thanks for your comment and for sharing your opinion. I think that in this case Joe was clearly bothered by the bullying. In this case he needed to tell someone about it for the problem to be solved. Every case is different and people will have different ways of dealing with bullying, but anything that makes you feel upset needs to be solved so it's really important to tell an adult when you think that you or a friend are being bullied - online and in real life.
Best wishes, Jo (LearnEnglish Teens Team)
