Are zoos a good thing?

Zoos are hugely popular attractions for adults and children alike. But are they actually a good thing?

Critics of zoos would argue that animals often suffer physically and mentally by being enclosed. Even the best artificial environments can't come close to matching the space, diversity, and freedom that animals have in their natural habitats. This deprivation causes many zoo animals to become stressed or mentally ill. Capturing animals in the wild also causes much suffering by splitting up families. Some zoos make animals behave unnaturally: for example, marine parks often force dolphins and whales to perform tricks. These mammals may die decades earlier than their wild relatives, and some even try to commit suicide.

On the other hand, by bringing people and animals together, zoos have the potential to educate the public about conservation issues and inspire people to protect animals and their habitats. Some zoos provide a safe environment for animals which have been mistreated in circuses, or pets which have been abandoned. Zoos also carry out important research into subjects like animal behaviour and how to treat illnesses.

One of the most important modern functions of zoos is supporting international breeding programmes, particularly for endangered species. In the wild, some of the rarest species have difficulty in finding mates and breeding, and they might also be threatened by poachers, loss of their habitat and predators. A good zoo will enable these species to live and breed in a secure environment. In addition, as numbers of some wild species drop, there is an increased danger of populations becoming too genetically similar. Breeding programmes provide a safeguard: zoo-bred animals can be released into the wild to increase genetic diversity.

However, opponents of zoos say that the vast majority of captive breeding programmes do not release animals back into the wild. Surplus animals are sold not only to other zoos but also to circuses or hunting ranches in the US or South Africa, where some people are willing to pay a lot of money for the chance to kill an animal in a fenced enclosure. Often, these animals are familiar with humans and have very little chance of escaping.

So, are zoos good for animals or not? Perhaps it all depends on how well individual zoos are managed, and the benefits of zoos can surely outweigh their harmful effects. However, it is understandable that many people believe imprisoning animals for any reason is simply wrong.

What do you think about zoos? Are they a good thing, or is it cruel to keep animals in captivity?

If there is enough space for the animals and they would be treat nice then that would not be a problem. I think zoos are good for the animal. It would protect them from dangerous hunter. In addition the animal would have eat better and weathy meats. Sometime the animal, which live in Wild Starve because there are less food to eat for them. This causes that animals hunt each other and the population of animals will thereby low

I think, it all depends on type of a zoo. I don't like seeing animals in cages, if it is for tourists' fun. I only support breeding programs and only if they always let the animals in the wild. As for poachers, I think that the zoos aren't the real solution, I think the authorities are supposed to provide some kind of protection from poachers. The punishments for poachers should be more strict.

In my opinion, though people want to keep animals safe, but it is very cruel to keep them in a cage without take them out of the cage even for 1 hour only.ONE HOUR! really, i am going to say that it is so cruel that you keep animal in the cage. What a shocking news that animals try to commit suicide because of desperate, lonely and vulnerable! But if you let animals free in the wild, they will extinct soon! i will be in the middle of both idea

I think that zoos are a good thing. Some animals can be in danger if they aren't kept in captivity. In my country, the last rhinoceros was killed by cruel hunters when it lived in natural habitat. I wonder why some people can treat animals cruelly? I think that if they have no kindness with animals. they also have no love with other people

These days, zoos are popular with people of all ages. But are they good or bad?
Zoos provide a safe environment for mistreated and abandoned animals to live and breed. Surplus they often inform people about animals and educate them about conservation issues. This way, more and more people protect and come closer to the animals. Also, many zoos release zoo-bred animals into the wild so that there are less endangered species in their natural habitat.
On the other hand, the animals are far away from their home and their wild relatives. Many times they suffer from being enclosed and lots of them die earlier.
All in all, there are both advantages and disadvantages to zoos. In my opinion, zoos are good and necessary. However, they have some disadvantages as well.

Animals need freedom, we don't want them extinct, don't we? Some scientist say there will be a mass extinction, we need to face it properly.

Zoos have many bad things. First, they keep animals in cages. This wil cause a big affect on their wilderness, make them unable to survive or adapt with the surrounding. The second thing is that usually animals in zoos are being experiments of the scientists. And mostly they all die after those experiments of cell transplantation. Think of them I just want to vomit. But I prefer artificial forests because they facilitate animals to be more comfortable than in the normal zoos

I don't visit zoos too often but I think that is a very good problem to disscusing. In general, the animals should be live in their habitat with their family. From my point of view people should adopted a pet if they want a better relationship with animals. The best solution is to see the wild animals on the National Geographic and the zoos leave them in the wild, where they have to be. :D

I don't think keep the animals in the zoo, because they might get stress and they need to go and live with nature...... It's good for people because we can see some rare animals in the zoo, but not good for animals :(

When you love somebody give it freedom. There are some advantages too to keep animals in zoos because display their natural habitats. It could be good but with for example polar bears is not as possible as we think. They can have something like seaweed because there's too hot climate and tempature for them. It's horriblle that we can't help all of the endangred species. But zoos sometimes are not good ideas. It can be a really bad and dirty, smelly zoo where there aren't people who want to help. They want only to earn money. And when they wanna sell the animals to the circus it's the worst thing which they can do for animals.

Frankly, I think zoos aren't good. First of all : animals in cages! That's cruel. Normally they live in a freedom and have much larger spaces around. When they live wide they are afraid of humans, but in a zoo they have no choice and have to live with them. I considered one more problem : many people feed those animals and that can cause serious ilnesses.
The true is : there are so many beautiful animals in the world that we sometimes don't even know anything about them .

In my view, there are both advantages and disadvantages. They are educated sources for children and students because they can learn by seeing real animals. Moreover, people don't have to go faraway to see them. In contrast, some zoos have bad conditions for animals such as climate. They can't learn skills or natural behaviours, and they might be stressful and dead. I support conservative programme that they do a research about endangered species, treating illness, and breeding programme.

I think the zoo has a lot of merits like creating more jobs, offering education place for people, especially children and protecting endagerous animals etc. So, I don't like to remove the zoo but considering animals in captivity, the zoo administrator offers convenience to the animals like widening the space, making a way that they can keep natural habits and not making them live lonely etc. National park is very good solution in this respect but the problem could be securing budget. It is more expensive than the zoo. So, it might be big burden to the zoo owner and I think the policy that government supports a little the national park is needed.

I think zoos are good things. Firstly, they attract a lot of tourists and make new work for lots of people, too.
Secondly, if we don't have zoos, the animals will be killes by the cruel hunters and it is really scary. Lastly, I think zoos are actually good.

It depends on the zoo. If it's a big zoo with lots of space fo he animals and if they treat well the animals then it's a great thing because the animals aren't tortured and people have a chance of conecting with animals and then they have the inspiration to take care of our environment to save animal habitats and animals and the best of all is that then people pass on their love for nature and animals to their kids and then the new generations also take care of our planet earth and don't buy animal products such as : animal rugs, animal coats...

It is cruel if I say that zoos are a good think just because their visitors are happy to see different species of animals. But we are talking about animals who suffer... Well, I can't smile when I'm watching them in such a pain because animals have a soul, a home and feelings. Just like us, the humans. I believe that zoos are not just a bad thing. They are worse, because they steel lives, break families and destroy our nature wich is much beautiful if we see animals right there.
