England is more than just London

I have been working as a language assistant in Northern Spain for just over a month now and whilst I have enjoyed introducing myself and talking about culture in the UK I have noticed that many Spanish students, teachers and friends of mine seem to think that the UK has only one place to visit – London!

Whilst of course London is our capital city and a fabulous place to visit, my personal opinion is that it is a big grey city with too many people and so I think that foreign visitors should really explore the UK a bit more! Living in Spain, I often have to explain to people that there are lots of other beautiful places to visit in my country which also have impressive historical or architectural features.

For example, my home in the UK is in the historical city of Chester. In Spain, hardly anybody has heard of this city and so I describe the location by saying it is near Manchester (of Manchester United football club) and Liverpool (the home of The Beatles). Yet Chester is a beautiful and important city in itself! As it is a Roman city we have city walls circling the city centre, Roman ruins and even an amphitheatre! In addition, the majority of the buildings in the city centre were built in the 1300s which means that most of the houses and shops are very pretty black and white striped buildings.

For these reasons, Chester is a very popular city amongst Asian and British tourists who want to see the historical sites, yet the majority of Spaniards don’t seem to know about it! Other beautiful places to visit in the UK include York, Bath, Cornwall, the Lake District, the Cotswolds... The list goes on!

It seems that most Spanish people who have visited the UK stayed in ‘The Big Smoke’ (London’s nickname due to its industrial origin) and didn’t venture anywhere else. What a shame! I hope that after reading this article, if you get the chance to visit my beautiful country, you might be a little bit more adventurous and travel outside of the grey bubble of our capital city.

Discussion
Why do you think so many people visit London when they visit the UK? Why do you think the writer wants to encourage people to travel to other places?

Well not only people from Spain visit more London when they are travelling, but also people all around the world. When people say "uk" it's hard not to think only in London. In my opinion, London gets more visits because appears with often on the media. If people talked about the other places in uk people would get to know more about other places they could go.

Great to see all of these comments! I completely agree that London is the centre of UK culture for foreign visitors and obviously you should visit the capital if you get the chance to! However, I also think every visitor to the UK should explore outside of the city too because then you will be able to get a real flavour of the life and culture of the UK :) (Besides, Fish and chips always taste nicer by the beach... Hahaa)

I think that most of the people take London as the symbol of England and the UK, also becouse it´s the capital city, they know some of the historical things, culture. I don´t think many people would like to go somewhere they´ve never heard about.
However I´m from the czech republic and you would probably know the Prague....and if you were there you would tell it´s a very nice city, but you might had some not so nice experiences in there.

I think that every city or region has different opinions, habits...etc.
of course they are not completelly diffrent, but there are some important diffrences....

btw..I would rather visit London (or Brighton,Birmingham,Oxford) than some of the cities, towns I don´t know...(and the fact is that czech people usually don´t like the Prague people...sry)

London is the capital city of England and one of the most mysterious place in the world.I've never been to Uk,but if I have the oppotunity to go there in every time of my life, the first destination would be London, because it is the centre of English culture. However,I agree with the writer that England is not just London. There are also many beautiful cities ,villages, towns of Uk to visit.

I think that people tend to visit London when they visit the UK just because it is the capital of the UK. If I have a chance to visit the UK, London will be my first destination. ( I believe that you also will choose to visit Hanoi- the capital of Vietnam in your first flight to my country.) There are so many famous places for us to go sightseeing when we visit a country, why don't we choose the capital-the symbol and pride of that country ?
In my opinion, the writer wants to encourage people to travel to other places because he/she hopes us to discover and find out more interesting and surprising things. However, this seems to be very difficult . There are 63 provinces and cities in my country, but I only have visited 4 provinces. I even can't remember how many beauty spots in Vietnam. :'(. Therefore, no surprise when foreigners often visit special places.
According to me, we had better publish traveling guide books so visitors will have more choices, they tend to visit places they know a bit more than places they know nothing about ( however, there are quite many people who are very adventurous to visit new places) . Anyway, the greatest city of a
country is its capital, discovering the capital is quite enough for us to know about general culture and life of a country.
I completely encourage you to visit other places. The more you are adventurous, the more you get wonderful experiences.
