He's behind you!

by CatrionaL

I have recently returned to work after two weeks off for the Christmas break. I returned home to England for two weeks for the holidays and spent some much needed time with my close friends and family.

Every Christmas my dad and I go to the local pantomime in Norwich. The pantomime is a traditional Christmas show in England, it is usually based around a well-known fairy tale and is very funny. There is a fight between good and evil with the heroes winning the day. The main characters in a panto are the princess, the prince, an evil king or queen, a joker (who interacts with the audience, he is like everyone’s best friend but he never gets the princess) and the dame (a man who dresses up as a woman).

The pantomime at my local theatre was Snow White. This is the tale of a princess who has an evil stepmother who is jealous of the fact that she is not the fairest of them all. She orders her servant to kill Snow White but he is too guilty to be able to kill her. Snow White runs away to the forest and lives with seven dwarfs. The evil Queen tries to kill Snow White again with a poisoned apple. However, Snow White is saved by a kiss from her true love, Prince Charming. In the panto there is lots of jokes and the line ‘he’s behind you’ is famous as there is always a scene in a panto where someone is looking for something and it is always behind them. A panto is also full of songs and dances. There is lots of audience participation and you can be as loud as you want. The dwarfs in the panto were puppets and they all had different types of accents. The panto ended with the wedding of Snow White and Prince Charming.

I love going to the panto as it is a great way to get in the Christmas spirit and I also love a good sing! What do you do each year during the holidays?
