In this type of exam, you have to change the form of a word (in brackets) to complete the sentence. For example:

My dad _____ (work) in a shop.
My sister _____ (not like) swimming.
This song is much _____ (good) than that one.

Read the whole sentence. It is important to understand the whole sentence before you begin.

The word is often a verb. Answer these questions for a verb:

  • Does it refer to the present, past or future?
  • Do you need a simple or continuous form?
  • Do you need an auxiliary verb?
  • Do you need to add an ‘s’ to the verb?
  • Is it an irregular verb?
  • Do you need a passive form? (be + past participle)

Sometimes the word is an adjective. Answer these questions for an adjective:

  • Do you need the comparative form?
  • Is it a regular or irregular form?
  • Do you need the superlative form?
  • Is it a regular or irregular form?
  • Remember! There is no plural adjective form. e.g. Your shoes are nice. (NOT Your shoes are nices)

Sometimes the word is an adverb. Answer these questions for an adverb.

  • What’s the adjective form?
  • Do you add ‘ly’ to the adjective? e.g. slow + ly = slowly
  • Is it irregular? e.g. fast, hard

Finally, remember these tips to get top marks in this type of test.

  • If you don’t know an answer, guess. You may be right!
  • Always check your spelling carefully.
  • Check your answers carefully when you finish.

Hi NoName Yet. Ooh, that sounds like a difficult exam! No, 'leader' is not correct here. A 'leader' is a person or thing that leads. It's normally a person. But it can't be the correct choice here because you can't combine it with another noun:
a leader country/ a leader designer/ a leader make of car = INCORRECT
Egypt is the leader... / She is their leader. / The group needs a leader. = CORRECT

On the other hand, 'leading' can be an adjective before a noun.
a leading country/ a leading designer/ a leading make of car = CORRECT

A tricky question! I hope that helps and that you will be able to use these words now.

Hi pinkpurple,
We're pleased to see that you're finding our website useful. Have you seen our  Grammar video about Passive forms: http://learnenglishteens.britishcouncil.org/grammar-vocabulary/grammar-videos/passive-forms?
Also, have a look at our Science UK section. The exercises that we have prepared in that section have lots of sentence transformation tasks. If you read the texts and do all the exercises I'm sure your grammar will improve a lot.
Best wishes, Jo (LearnEnglish Teens Team)

Hi MALINE! Yes, you're absolutely right. I've updated the exercise so it accepts that answer too. Thanks! Are you finding the exercises useful? Which kinds of exercises do you like?
