Is dance a sport or an art?

by HannahBlogger2

I have been dancing since I was 14 years old, when my best friend dragged me to an after-school dance class. I enjoyed that dance class so much that I have been dancing ever since. After every dance class, however, I always have to stretch out my legs and back, as dancing can be quite a tough workout! It feels like as much exercise as a contact sport or going to the gym – but dancing is not widely considered to be a sport. Does the fact that dancing is expressive and artistic mean that it is not a sport?

Many dancers would argue that dancing is a sport, as it requires great physical stamina, strong muscles and impressive flexibility. No matter what style of dance you are participating in, you will always be using all of your muscles while dancing and this can often be for several hours a day. Additionally, in the more traditional dance styles (such as ballet and contemporary dance), men often lift their female dance partners way up in the air. The strength that dancers need means that they are often just as athletic as footballers, runners or swimmers.

On the other hand, many people argue that dance is an art form. Dances often exhibit emotion, portray characters and tell stories. Dancing to music is creative and visually appealing to the eyes and ears, just like watching a play or a professional orchestra. The glittery costumes, the stage make-up and the big hairstyles are artistic and imaginative. It is easy to see why many people consider dance to be an art form.

I personally believe that dance is both a sport and an art. I believe that a great dancer will be a mixture of an athlete and an artist. You could have the strongest muscles in the world but not necessarily be a great dancer. Likewise, you could be a great actress who can portray emotions easily but you still might not be able to dance.

However, whether you consider dance to be an art or a sport, the important thing is to enjoy it! Dancing is a great way to make new friends and it's a really fun way to exercise!

Have you ever been to a dance class? Do you think dance is a sport, an art or a bit of both?

I've never been to a dance class but I sometimes dance on my own or watch some tutorials.
I agree that dancing is both a sport and an art.

I have been in dance classes of the Salesian Scout group, but this group gave folklorica dance. For me dance is a sport as well as art, because you preserve your body, you express and express feelings in dance, apart from the passion that you have when dancing is shown.

ItzelBP I think about the dance and it's a sport because is necessary condition, discipline, time, dedication, effort, muscles, try all the time, put energy a lot, toy nedd to stay a focus with the steps with your movement and need condition a lot, memorize everthing, is kind of two things in one, as soon as the movement and the music are weave together because is essential what you feel the music, you feel insite of your body, in the dance you can use for get energy but the most important is enjoy it! In the beggining you feel so tired but after yoy can feel well, is necessary the muscles and next will be strongest muscles

of course, I have been in a class dance (ballet) it was really artistic, you need express emotions, be strong and be concentrated, the ballet help me for realease the stress and give me flexibility. i bealive dance, whateher slowly or hard, you need strong, flexibility, delicacy or firmness for do an excellent show; obviously is an art, but your body express this art and for this i think is an integral sport (73) in my experience, the ballet is really complicated, you need a hard training if you will be a good dancer, the strength in you legs, and your feet it must be extreme! but in my opinion is so amazing!

When I was little I was in some dance classes because I did not know how to do it and I got involved, however I did not last long because personally I do not like dancing and the classes were very busy, so I left it. very apart from this, I consider that the dance is half art and sports, because it is beautiful and apart from it it is an activity where you work many muscles. Most of the dancers are very well-defined people with a strong body. ballet dancers have impressive leg strength. so this is my opinion Brenda Paola CM

Nicasio Eduardo P. H. Actually, I've never been to any kind of dance, yet I consider it if it's a sport. Because as a sport, it takes dedication and effort, which will make your work the best possible. A kind of art, more like a representation of it. Apart from being a dicipline that requires strength from the person this and the technique to do so. All the passion they leave behind, must be considered as sport. t is also a popular sport among girls, as many of them enter ballet or dance from a young age.

Yes, I remember that when I was like 7 or 8 years old I went with my mom to zumba classes. First, I only watched my mom dancing but one day I decided to try, so the next day I started classes. At first I feel strange and exhausted but then I feel happy and excited. On the way I think that dance can be both of them. It can be a sport when you practice zumba and it can be art if you practice ballet so it depends of what type of dance you practice. Edlin A.H.M

I have never been in a dance class, but I have danced in several dances and it requires time of training and dedication, from my point of view, dance is both an art and a sport, because dance is a way of expressing and doing exercise at the same time. I also think that dancing is a sport because, as in any sport, you need discipline and training to improve or practice for competitions. Dance is also an art because apart from expressing feelings it is also used to represent cultures and traditions. I have also seen that dance has evolved a lot over the years, since the types of music have also changed. Guillermo Arturo L.C.

In my opinion I think that dance is both a sport and an art, because at least you need to have that feeling of happiness. Besides when you are dancing take out all the stress and other things that later it help you as a person. However, at most you need to have knowledge and experience when you are dancing. In addition to this you preferably have learned in a dance class to be the best of the place. But, also you need to have that condition and skill that makes it a sport. Regarding the question I have never been in a dance class, but I would like that.

Yes! I have been in a dance class, I remember that I was 9 years, I went to classes in the summer, it was very funny because I met people, unfortunately those people were left in the past because I the classes was in other city. I think that dance is a combination of sport and art because dance helps to look well, stay fit, relax, release emotions, etcetera using your body for convey feelings. You get the benefits of the sport while express different sensations like art. Definitely dance is a good option for be happy and stay in good shape. Nabila PV

Of course i have been in a dance class , i remember when i was fifteen years old i went to dance classes for my party and that helped me a lot to realease my body and lose a lot of weight , so for that reason i believe that dancing also is considered a sport because it helps you in many ways to feel better , look better and stay positive like the same way it makes you feel to be excercising. I believe that dance is a sport and an art at the same time since you need to be athletic to resist the hard exercise routines, not only for men but also for women, because the fisrt ones have to lift their female partners and the girls need strenght in their limbs to facilitate that movement. However, even if you execute exercise routines well it could be not enough to be a good dancer seeing that you need to know how to express your emotions to give a nice show. That´s why personally, i have never been in a dance class because i´m considering to take an acting class before wich it would help me a lot to motivate me and be able to cover that required histrionic part. I like dance, all my life I have danced, because makes me happy and helps to forget the issues of the live, because you need to focus on the music, the emotions you need to express and the steps. I like contemporary dance, on my childhood I practiced ballet. And now I can´t dance because a few months I had a surgery, so, I try with belly dance, yes, it is difficult, but isn´t than ballet. I think that the dance is an art and sport, you can really lose calories when you dance and it isn´t just steps, you need resistance, focus and be strong, and it is an art because you can feel different emotions. In my point of view, dance is both, dance is an art and a sport, because when you are dancing, you can exercise a lot of muscles, dancing is an activity beneficial to your health, on the other hand, dance is an art because art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power, and when we are dancing, we can use our feelings to express ourselves, to manifest our emotions and how we feel, that is why I considered that dance is both of them, an art and a sport. -- Daniel Alejandro SP --

GEORGINA RL My opinion about the article is that the dance is a combination between sport and art because when i was a child, i practice dance folkloric. When i went to the class usually we started first with warm up then we start with steps basic dance like cardio routine. The teacher continue add steps of medium leve, in this moment is when i believe the dance becomes in a sport because we work most of our body from chest, waist, belly, shoulder, arms and legs. Finally the dance is also an art because it express feelings, emotions through of music and the steps dance. In conclusion the dance is the combination of two disciplines.

Well, when I was a kid (I don’t remember the age exactly) i went out with my aunt so much, and she went to dance clases, so I do it too. In my point of view, dance is both (art and sport) because you need to feel the music and show it to the public and your partner but at the same time the moves are wild and wonderful and if you don’t have the force, you can’t do it. We have to take a moment to appreciate that dancers have to do exercise all the days (many hours) to have elasticity and don’t lose it.

OSCAR My opinion on whether dancing is sport or art is that it depends on the type of dance, for example I was in modern dance classes and in that type of dance sometimes I needed a lot of strength and resistance, so I had to dedicate hours of training to be able to do the dance, so in my opinion that type of dance could be a sport although officially it is not, just as there are types of dance in which it does not take much effort to do them and in my opinion those types of dance would be more of an art for I would recommend people who have never been to dance classes

In my view dance is art and sport but in this order. Most important is emotions. Dance show us not only a spectacle but a deeper reflexion too. Of course to dance very well we must be in a good form. We must stay fit all the time and training hard on gym. Connection between emotions and physical fittnes will make us a good dancer. To sum up we should be sensitive and physically fit to dance on high level.
